I wonder if that is because (stereotyping here) a lot of men are employed in industrial jobs that are hurting, whereas nurses and waitresses and secretaries are last to get laid off. Even if they lay off 25% of the manual labor, they usually keep the secretary. Obvs not all men do manly jobs, and not all women make sandwiches in the kitchen (sorry) but there are definite trends by gender and I suspect women may tend to be in jobs that are less vulnerable to recession.
A significant number of tribes in the Americas were matriarchal. Women actually had better roles in those societies than in any European society at the time.

Well, that's just stupid. This chart says nothing about how much each job is paying. Many people would consider $50,000 in debt worth it if it leads to $20,000 higher starting salary. Which, from my observations has been the case (at least with worthwhile degrees). |

I was in Germany TDY with the Air Force at Hahn AB for for a month when the wall fell. I could not get to Berlin because active duty military required special papers to travel to Berlin, so I watched it all on TV. Civilian contractors from our group simply booked a train and went to Berlin to "soak it all in".Growing up as a Army Brat in Germany as a kid (Landstuhl Army Medical Center) I never thought that I would live to see the wall peacefully come down.And then to see the Soviet Union fall in a graceful way really had my hopes soaring for Tiananmen Square. The world was so close....
